Audience comments “It’s a love story” after watching BALLROOM DANCER
The documentary focuses on Slavik, now 34-years-old, and his new dance partner and girlfriend, Anna Melnikova, and what steps they are taking to make it to the top of the Professional Latin Dancesport category - a place Slavic knows all to well.It sums it up in the movie trailer that reads:
“He used to be the best Latin dancer in the world.”
“With a new partner and lover, he wants to make a comeback. This is his last chance…”
Slavik shocked the world of Latin Dancesport when he first came onto the scene in May of 1997 and started winning titles all over the world. He was making history at that time and was said to be the fastest rising star in Latin Dancesport.
In less than a year, he took 1st in the IDSF Open World Amateur Latin category on March 15, 1998. Later that same month, he placed 1st in another IDSF Open World Amateur Latin category at the KIEV OPEN on March 28, 1998, in Kyiv, Ukraine.
One of Slavic’s best wins in his career, so far, was placing 1st in the Professional Latin category at the UK OPEN on January 18, 2005, in Bournemouth, England. His partner at the time was Karina Smirnoff, currently a professional teacher on USA’s version of Dancing With The Stars.
Slavic is one of the best Latin dancer that has ever lived and has a style that is unmatched to this day. His ability to see and to critique Latin figures is astonishing and the finished product is nothing short of Latin perfection. His talent, however, carries a downside that has kept him from keeping partners for any length of time.
This documentary shows the real lives of Slavic and Anna along with other Latin dancers and why they travel to the four comers of the globe to compete. It paints a different picture of what we see on TV and at competitions – the not so glamorous side. The camera follows Slavic and Anna on a personal level, revealing the pain and joy they experience and the sacrifices they make along their way.
This is a must see for anyone who wants to know what it is really like to be a Latin star and what they go through to achieve this level of success.
Film description – translated from DanishThe former world ballroom dance champion, Slavik Kryklyvyy, is a man of principle. A decade ago, he was one of the elite in the world of Dancesport. Today he has set out to reclaim his place on the waxed floors. And although he has aged, suffered a serious hip injury, and has an uncontrollable temper that has scared all his former dance partners away, his new dance partner (and lover), Anna, is helping him to achieve his goal. With her will of steel, she travels with Slavik and embarks on a journey toward the stars. As the dream of regaining a place in the limelight seems to get farther away, Slaviks tempererament sparks, and their love is put to the test. In ‘Ballroom Dancer’ you will have a front row seat full of drama, where Slavik’s inner demons are revealed along with his passions. The movie allows viewers a unique insight into the wonderful world of Dancesport with all the glamor, glitz, and thick layers of makeup. The question is whether Slavic will be able to dance his way out of the life crisis he is in. (www.cphdox.dk) |
